Why do I lose a lot of hair when I brush it and shampoo it?
Hey all. I'm 26 and I have extremely long hair....almost to my butt. I love my long hair and I'd like to keep it long. The only problem is that whenever I brush it or shampoo it, I lose large clumps of hair. It's worse when I shampoo. I'll pull an entire handful of hair out when I rinse. This can't be normal! I never color or blow-dry my hair, or any other damaging things. Why do I lose so much and how can I prevent it?
Next time you brush your hair, take the hair that comes out and look at it closely. If you see a white 'bulb' on the tip then that is normal hair shedding after it has come to the end of its growth cycle. If you see no white bulb and instead see a lot of frayed edges then you have split ends and your hair is damaged. Since you have long hair it might well be a case of both normal hair shedding and breakage. Be sure to invest in quality brushes and combs and use care when brushing and combing. You should always comb or brush from the bottom up and not the other way around in order to avoid damage from pulling tangles all the way from root to tip. You need to take care of what kind of shampoo and conditioners you use as well, using the kind that put lightweight moisture into to your hair. I would also recommend getting your hair trimmed regularly (every three months or so) in order to avoid split ends which, if left unchecked, will eventually go all the way up the hair shaft and break the hair off. Once every few years, you might want to cut your hair three or four inches, just to let go of some of the weight of it and keep it healthy. Good luck!
