Why do people wear bandannas over their face?

What does it mean when someone wears a bandanna over their face (like pulled up over their nose and mouth) or just lets it hang under their chin? What genre is this associated with? What statement does it make?
(I'm not referring to people in gangs that do this, because I've seen plenty of non- gang members do it.)

Well, sometimes it's because it's cool.. You look cool wearing it.

Personally, I don't want to inhale all the road dust while i'm driving my motorcycle. I think cowboys have some similar reasons.

You put it under your chin so you can eat. And when you go on the road again you just pull it up again and not have to search it in your pockets.
